AI for hospital doctors - balancing risks and opportunities

Taking place on Wednesday 28 October from 9.30am to 12.30pm, this course is designed to explore the practical experience of AI and the professional and medicolegal risks and opportunities.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly part of everyday hospital practice. Many doctors are already encountering AI-enabled tools that support clinical and non-clinical work - for example, systems that assist with clinical documentation, discharge summaries, clinic letters, triage or prioritisation, test result management, and workforce or rota planning.

Some may be using generative AI to support drafting of policies, guidelines, pathways, teaching materials or reflective documentation, while others may be trialling ambient or transcription tools to support meetings, MDT discussions or service improvement work.

For some clinicians, AI represents an opportunity to improve efficiency, reduce administrative burden and enhance patient care. Others may be understandably cautious, with concerns about data protection, clinical safety, professional accountability, bias, and how these tools fit within existing NHS systems and governance structures.

This interactive course is designed specifically for hospital doctors and will explore:

  • Practical use of AI in secondary care, including both clinical and non-clinical applications, and where these tools are currently being used or piloted
  • Medicolegal, ethical and professional risks, including accountability, documentation, clinical decision-making, data governance and regulatory expectations
  • How to work safely with AI in teams, including identifying risks early, applying appropriate safeguards, and contributing to local discussions about governance, adoption and oversight

Participants will leave feeling better informed about the opportunities and limitations of AI, more confident in identifying and managing risk, and equipped to take informed questions, ideas and challenges back to their clinical teams, departments and organisations for further discussion.
