CHANGES are being made to the way medical graduates are selected for the foundation programme from 2013.
The ‘white space’ questions will be replaced with an invigilated Situational Judgement Test (SJT) and an Educational Performance Measure (EPM) will be used to reflect educational performance at medical school.
The changes were outlined in a report from the Medical Schools Council, commissioned by the Department of Health in England, detailing ways of improving selection tools for recruitment to the UK foundation programme.
The recommendations have been accepted by all four UK health departments and will be introduced this year for applications for the 2013 programme.
The SJT consists of 70 questions in two hours 20 minutes, in exam conditions. All FP 2013 candidates will have to sit the test on either Friday, December 7, 2012 or Monday, January 7, 2013.
The EPM measures clinical and non-clinical skills, knowledge and performance up to the point of application. It comprises three elements: medical school performance to date in deciles (replacing the previous quartiles), additional degrees and academic achievments. Performance at medical school carries most weight with 34-43 points available out of a total 50. The other two categories are worth up to five and two points respectively.
