Women’s voices must be heard in healthcare – MDDUS comment

Commenting on the publication of the renewed Women’s Health Strategy for NHS England, Dr Emily Shepherd calls for women's voices to be heard in healthcare.

Commenting on the publication of the renewed Women’s Health Strategy for NHS England, Dr Emily Shepherd said:

“Women’s voices must be heard in healthcare, and how this is delivered will be the test of this strategy.

“Delays in diagnosis, symptoms being dismissed and uneven access to care are well recognised, particularly for women with endometriosis and in menopause.

“For doctors, this women’s health strategy comes at a time of sustained pressure on time and increasingly complex consultations. When expectations outpace the conditions in which care is delivered, variation and complaints follow.

“Improving outcomes for women will depend on giving doctors the time, training and support needed to deliver consistent care.”
