MDDUS joins call to retain doctors’ health route in GMC investigations

MDDUS is pleased to join the Medical Protection Society and 30 other organisations in urging the UK Government to retain health as a category of impairment in fitness to practise investigations.

We’re deeply concerned that anticipated changes to the Medical Act (1983) would treat doctors with a health concern, and who face an investigation by their regulator, as having “an inability to practice to a sufficient standard.”

We believe this is an unjust and pejorative way to view doctors – especially in GMC cases involving mental health.

Dr John Holden, chief medical officer at MDDUS, said: “While we welcome the Government’s commitment to modernise medical regulation, dropping the health ground poses serious risks to both doctors and their patients.

“Health cases need to be handled sensitively. If this change goes ahead, doctors may feel discouraged from seeking help if their health is impacting their practice, potentially jeopardising patient safety.

“It also sends the wrong message at a time when doctors’ wellbeing should be a top priority for the Government.”

In January, our membership survey found that 21% of doctors had thought about self-harm or of taking their own life at least once during their career. A regulatory framework that overlooks health concerns could make this even worse.
