Meet the students inspiring the next generation of doctors and dentists

Student doctors and dentists across the UK are showcasing their journey from graduation to qualified practitioners in a new social media series they hope will inspire future professionals.

Six students studying in Aberdeen, Glasgow, Newcastle and Warwick are taking part in a social documentary project called ‘1to5’.

‘1to5’ is the brainchild of the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland (MDDUS), a mutual organisation that represents the professional interests of 67,000 doctors and dentists.

The 1to5 posts on Instagram are designed to amplify the voices of students as they receive their final exam results, balance life inside and outside of work and navigate new professional challenges and responsibilities after graduation.

The students are:

Ormela Azate, 25, from north west London studying medicine at the University of Warwick

She said: “This an invaluable platform to raise awareness about the challenges and triumphs of medicine.

“I’m going to use this opportunity to highlight issues affecting young doctors today, offering encouragement and tips on where they can go to find support.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to have a meaningful impact on the lives of future medics.”

Sophie Caldwell, 24, from Ayrshire studying dentistry at the University of Glasgow

She said: “Through my social media content I want to give an authentic glimpse into the life of a new dentist.

“Throughout the year, I will be highlighting triumphs, addressing fears, and sharing practical advice.

“I’m looking forward to sharing this journey and growing both professionally and personally.”

Alice Casey, 22, from near Sunderland studying dentistry at Newcastle University

She said: “I would love to be a role model to younger students applying to dental school.

“We’re in a generation consumed by social media where comparing yourself to others can be disheartening.

“I love speaking to people, sharing with them and learning from them. If by sharing my experiences I can help young dentists become more confident, that would be rewarding.”

Emma McAlister, 23, from Belfast studying dentistry at Newcastle University

She said: “We’re not told very much about life after dental school, so it can be very daunting not knowing what to expect.

“I believe I can be a reassuring figure for new dentists, helping them to understand the realities of the profession.”

Vinci Pabellan, 28, from the Isle of Man studying medicine at the University of Aberdeen

He said: “I want to use the 1to5 project to show the realities of medical training, and keep building trust in the profession – something that is so easily eroded in an era of misinformation.

“I hope that by sharing my experiences I can demonstrate the importance of empathy in medicine and inspire others to speak up for change where it is needed.”

Jessica Thorburn, 22, from Perthshire studying medicine at the University of Aberdeen

She said: “I know that my new job is going to push me out of my comfort zone.

“I also know that there are hundreds of people going through the same thing right now and there will be hundreds more going through it next year.

“If I can make that process easier for just one person by sharing my own experiences then that would be incredible.”

It is essential for all doctors and dentists to have indemnity or insurance cover to protect them against complaints that may arise during their career. As well as discretionary indemnity, MDDUS provides its members with 24/7 access to expert advice and an extensive programme of risk training and CPD resources.

MDDUS chief executive Chris Kenny said: “I am delighted to welcome all six students to the 1to5 project and excited to follow along on their journey.

“We know that the adjustment from student to qualified practitioner can be a challenge for every foundation grade doctor and dentist.

“By amplifying the voices of talented new practitioners we hope to inspire future students and help them to connect to others navigating the rewards and pressures of the healthcare sector.”
