CEO of MDDUS comment on Dame Clare Marx stepping down from GMC

MDDUS CEO Chris Kenny comments on the announcement today (20 July) that Dame Clare Marx, Chair of the General Medical Council, is stepping down on health grounds.

Dame Clare Marx is to step down as Chair of the General Medical Council (GMC) on health grounds, it was announced today (Tuesday, July 20).

Commenting on the news, the chief executive of MDDUS, Chris Kenny, said:

“Everyone at MDDUS is tremendously sorry to learn that Dame Clare has been diagnosed with cancer, and we wish her strength and fortitude as she steps down from her role as Chair of the GMC."

“Dame Clare’s contribution to medicine, both as a surgeon and as an expert adviser across many reviews and investigations, is substantial."

“She has also broken down many barriers for women entering medicine, and has been a valued mentor and leadership figure to so many right across the profession.”

Mr Kenny added: “The appointment of Dame Carrie MacEwen as Acting Chair will ensure stability and continuity at the GMC until a permanent appointment can be made.”
