Support materials for enhanced dental CPD

  • Date: 27 October 2017

A SERIES of guidance documents and templates for dental professionals in support of enhanced continued professional development (ECPD) have been published on the GDC website.

ECPD is being launched next year by the GDC as the “first step in a longer-term reform of CPD to move to a system based on quality of CPD activity rather than quantity”. It will include the introduction of a personal development plan (PDP) for each member of the dental team to support their CPD with corresponding learning outcomes.

There will also be changes to the number of hours that dental professionals must complete during a cycle and a new requirement to make an annual declaration of the number of CPD hours completed each year. The changes will take place in January 2018 for dentists and in August 2018 for dental care professionals.

Among the new support materials being made available on the GDC website are ECPD guidance for professionals and CPD providers, a PDP template with example PDPs and an activity log template with examples. There is also an ECPD transition tool available, which is designed to help dental professionals who are mid-CPD cycle to understand the requirements.

A new guidance sheet from the MDDUS Risk Education team also offers a useful overview of the key points to consider (member login required).
