MEDICAL professionals who have made outstanding contributions to healthcare were celebrated at a glittering ceremony marking the BMJ Group Improving Health Awards 2012.
MDDUS was proud to act as headline sponsor of the prestigious event which took place at the London Hilton on Park Lane on May 23. It was hosted by comedian Sally Phillips and saw winners unveiled in 12 categories.
A new award for this year was the Karen Woo Award which recognises individuals who have gone beyond the call of duty to care for patients. It was presented to Lucy Mathen whose charity Second Sight has helped restore sight to more than 50,000 people in India. Dr Mathen gave up her job to run the charity unpaid and full-time.
Winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award was cardiologist and Nobel Prize winner Dr Bernard Lown whose work has included developing the defibrillator.
Dr Alexander Finlayson was named Junior Doctor of the Year for his MedicineAfrica project which helps educate medical students and doctors in Somaliland. Based in London, Dr Finlayson is head of research at the King’s Centre for Global Health, King’s College London and is an Academic Clinical Fellow in Cancer Medicine at Oxford University.
MDDUS also sponsored the award for Clinical Commissioning Team of the Year which went to the NHS Nottingham City Clinical Commissioning Group for their work to ensure the Health Bill is shaped for the benefit of the local population.
The award for best Healthcare Communication Campaign went to the G-A-Y bar in London, the England and Wales Cricket Board Science and Medicine Team won Sports and Exercise Team of the Year while the NHS in London walked away with the Improvement in Patient Safety Award. Other winners included Dr Jon Cardy who was named Clinical Leader of the Year, the Family Drug and Alcohol Court Intervention Team in London won the Working in Partnership award and Nottingham University NHS Hospital were honoured with the award for Transforming Patient Care Using Technology.
