MDDUS is pleased to confirm they have again been commissioned by NHS England to provide indemnity to enable its members to undertake additional sessions to address the pressures on out-of-hours providers and urgent care settings over the coming winter period.
MDDUS Director of Development David Sturgeon said: “We welcome the NHS England announcement and are pleased to be contributing to sensible, pragmatic solutions for our GPs.
“NHS England specifically requires this to be provided on an occurrence basis, our preferred model and gold standard for protecting our members. This direct reimbursement scheme has been successful over previous years in recruiting GPs to provide additional sessions to meet the increase in patients’ needs over the winter months.
“MDDUS members delivered over 21,000 additional sessions during 2017/18. Members can apply for the scheme through the MDDUS website.
“Building on the success of this scheme, MDDUS has proposed that the direct reimbursement of all indemnity fees could provide an immediate solution to addressing GP recruitment and retention issues in the absence of detail on the state-backed indemnity scheme.”
NHS Contract Requirements
3.1 Mandatory and Minimum Requirements
3.1.1 Every GP applying to utilise the scheme must already have an existing policy with the Provider. GPs must only be offered cover for extra sessions that they wish to take, over and above their current working arrangements. The cover provided to GPs under this scheme must be on an occurrence basis, as it must not be time limited or have a cap on the amount the GP is able to claim.
