NEW standards to improve the quality of hospital accommodation for trainee doctors have been introduced following a BMA campaign.
The requirements apply in hospitals across Wales following an agreement between the Welsh government and BMA Cymru Wales. Health boards will now have to inspect and maintain a certain standard of accommodation as well as provide improved on-site catering, mess and night-time facilities.
Junior doctors in Wales had expressed concerns about the poor state of some accommodation, the BMA News reported.
Chair of the BMA Welsh junior doctors committee Dai Samuel welcomed the move but said a “significant amount of work” now needs to be done.
The standards were developed following the Welsh government’s decision to extend the availability of free hospital accommodation for junior doctors indefinitely, following a campaign by BMA Cymru Wales.
