GMC launches new ethical scenarios on end of life care

15 July 2010

The GMC has updated its Good Medical Practice in Action website with a new set of ethical scenarios including case studies aimed at helping doctors and patients better understand the new guidance on end of life care.

Among other ethical dilemmas the new scenarios explore difficult issues such as talking to a dying patient about whether to attempt CPR, what to do when there is a dispute between relatives over care of an elderly patient, and the steps to take if a doctor has a conscientious objection to withdrawing treatment.

The scenarios were developed with the help of ‘media GP’ Dr Rosemary Leonard, who said:

"I am delighted to be part of Good Medical Practice in Action as it is so widely used and respected. Not only is it a great learning tool for doctors to familiarise themselves with GMC guidance in real-life situations, it also provides patients with an insight into often complex dilemmas that doctors face."

Good Medical Practice in Action launched in 2008 with just twelve scenarios. In two years it has grown to accommodate 60 scenarios and has received over 40,000 visits from doctors, medical students and members of the public.
