GPSIs can continue minor skin cancer surgery

GPs with a special interest (GPSIs) will be allowed to continue minor surgery for a range of skin cancers under updated NICE guidance due out on May 25.

GPSIs who have links with acute trust governance frameworks will be allowed to treat “the full range of skin cancers”.

The final draft of NICE’s skin cancer guidance has quelled fears that doctors would only be allowed to operate on a limited selection of carcinoma types. There had been concerns that tight controls would have restricted the treatment of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) in primary care and led to an unnecessary rise in secondary care referrals.

Following a number of changes made through preliminary drafts, the guidance will now allow GPSIs to continue treatment of BCCs in primary care.
