FAQs

1. Not all of the GPs in our practice are members of the MDDUS. Can I still make use of the advisory service?

Yes. Our HR and Employment Advisory Team is available to provide free advice and guidance to all members who employ staff. However, only practices where all employing GP/GDPs are members of the MDDUS can apply for the LRI package.

2. Do I or my practice have to apply or register for free HR and employment law advice?

No. Members who employ staff or a Practice Manager within an MDDUS group scheme are automatically eligible to access advice on HR and employment matters, there is no registration process.

3. How many times can I contact the HR and Employment Law Advisory Team for advice?

MDDUS members who are GP/GDP partners and Practice Managers of MDDUS group schemes have free and unlimited access to the HR and Employment Law Advisory Team.

4. What hours is the advisory service available?

The advisory service is available between 9-5pm, Monday to Friday. Outside these hours an emergency service is available from our partners, Law at Work, who can also be contacted on 0845 270 2034.

5. Will the MDDUS HR and Employment Law Advisory Team review employment contracts and policy documents?

Yes. The team can advise on the drafting of employment documents and also review the completed document.

6. Does the advice line provide advice for employees?

The advisory helpline is only available to provide advice to members for matters pertaining to their responsibilities as an employer.

7. I have been receiving free advice from the HR and Employment Law Advisory Team but the situation has now escalated. Can I register for the LRI package in-order that I can benefit from free legal assistance?

As the incident that gave rise to the legal action took place prior to your registration with the LRI package legal assistance will not be available. This package operates on a claims-made basis which means that you can only access assistance with employment law difficulties arising from incidents that occurred during the period that you are registered for this package.

8. As a practice registered for the LRI package will I be liaising with the HR and Employment Law Advisory Team?

The experienced MDDUS HR and Employment Law Advisory Team will also be available for those registered with the LRI package. Once legal proceedings are initiated they will then instruct and guide our employment law partners while continuing to provide you with a consistent and familiar point of contact.

9. Does the LRI package extend to all employees in the practice?

The package extends to all employees with the exclusion of salaried doctors or dentists.

10. Within the LRI package is the indemnity or extent of legal representation provided limited?

The LRI package provides practices with access to an annual aggregate maximum limit of £250,000 per year for legal expenses and awards. We believe that this is competitive in comparison to traditional insurance products.

11. Do I need to follow the advice given within the LRI package if I don’t agree with it?

The advice provided is compliant with current legislation but you can choose to progress in a different manner on the understanding that you will not be indemnified for any action you take and that you will be liable for any costs you incur.

12. Who are the Employment Law partners providing representation within the LRI package?

Our appointed employment law partners, Law at Work, are experienced specialists within their field and have worked closely with the MDDUS on a number of initiatives over the last four years. They are highly experienced in providing a range of support services designed to enable Partners and Practice Managers to identify, manage and reduce areas of risk within their practices.
